Callan Solem and VDL Torlando are Set for Indoors

Chester Springs, PA – September 14, 2010 –Callan Solem of Callan Solem Show Stables had an incredible ride with her top mount during the historic Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix on Sunday, September 12 at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York. The pair was one of only four that cleared all the obstacles - joining the four-faulters after they barely had a toe on the water jump boundary tape on Steve Stephens incredible track. Solem has been training VDL Torlando since he was just six years old and, at 10, the horse is proving that he will join Solem to become half of quite the international team.

“When you do a class like that successfully, it’s like getting a new horse,” smiled Solem. “You begin to believe you have an international jumping horse and that’s really exciting! I know him and I thought that he was going to do his very best but when I walked the course I knew that it was the biggest track he had ever jumped. He handled it very easily because he trusts me and knows that I will not get him into anything he cannot do.”

Solem originally tried this incredible stallion by Corland at the end of 2006 in Holland and with the help of the Torlando Group she was able to purchase the talented young horse. For four years she has worked very diligently with him to help him reach his full potential. She was given advice to take her time with Torlando since horses by Corland are very careful. Now, Solem’s hard work and patience has paid off.

“He was a stallion and I was confident he would go down and jump anything, but in producing him I really needed to go slow and fill in a solid foundation,” explained Solem. “I wanted to be sure he was ready to be successful at every level. He really has all the right answers in him and if you just gently guide him he will find them. He has learned the sport now and he really likes it.”

After VDL Torlando’s inspiring performance during the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix, and at the top grand prix classes in the country this summer, he will get a short break. Solem will then begin preparing him to compete in the World Cup Qualifier classes this winter during the Indoor circuit and at the 2011 Winter Equestrian Festival. “This is my first winter in Wellington, and I am really looking forward to it. We have a great facility near the showgrounds, with good turn-out and permanent stabling. This is so important because if you take good care of your horse and keep him in good condition to have good results then everything works out from there,” noted Solem. “It’s the same with all the horses in the program. Proper planning, preparation and care in training helps make sure the horses are ready to do their best!”
